Hot Thai dessert: Khanom Kork

ขนมครก
Khanom Krok

Kanom Krok is a Thai sweet and savory dessert commonly found on street-sides throughout Thailand. Kanom Krok would translate to something like rice pudding in English or coconut pudding. It is basically a mixture of flour batter and coconut cream cooked in a cast iron pan. Usually the pan is placed directly over charcoal in a round clay oven. You can find them in most places around Thailand with the same basic recipe.

Kanom krok has two layers. The ‘bottom layer’ and the ‘topping’, which have three options such as spring onion, corn and taro. When the first rice flour mix is cooked, the sweet coconut milk topping will follow. After the cakes are cooked, which comprises of the crispy outer layer with a super soft inner coconut layer, the hemispheres are usually placed on top of each other to make little spheres. Before you taste the pudding, beware that it will be very hot! Many food lovers prefer to eat their Khanom Krok when lukewarm and not straight out of the pan.
