Thai exotic fried bugs – Crickets, Worms, Grasshoppers: Malang Tod

Malang Tod

Although Thai cuisine has become super popular internationally, there is at least one Thai food that may never be adopted by other cultures. Malang Tod in Thai means ‘fried insects’, and they are one of the weirdest things you will ever eat. Typically fried in pepper and soy or fish sauce, the crickets, worms, and grasshoppers are usually eaten as a snack in the afternoon, or as a crunchy and crispy night-time treat. While this may sound like a bit of a strange and unappetizing snack, the idea of eating bugs is nothing new in Thailand. Insects are a great source of protein, high in iron and calcium. It is common to see this kind of dish all over Thailand. They are available at famous tourist places and street vendors.
