ขนมไข่นกกระทา
Khanom Kai Nok Kratha
Khanom khai nok kratha is a Thai street food that is a cross between a dessert and a snack, but in actuality is seen as more of a snack. The dish is a fried sweet potato dough ball. Khanom is placed at the beginning of the name of a sweet to indicate the dish is a dessert or snack. Khai nok kratha means quail egg, as the size of the dough ball is roughly the same size as that of a quail’s egg. The main ingredients are sweet potatoes and tapioca starch, mixed well and deep-fried until it becomes a golden-brown color. The inside is light and airy (almost hollow) whereas the exterior forms a very thin and crispy shell. The flavor is only mildly sweet and best eaten freshly cooked as something you pop into your mouth while strolling in the park.
