Hin Ta Hin Yay - Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks
Hin Ta Hin Yay - Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks, Koh Samui
The interesting rock formations known as Hin Ta and Hin Yai – situated just south of Lamai – attract locals and tourists alike. They are so named for two reasons. The first being their similarity in appearance to the male and female genitalia, and the second being that Samui people believe they were born from the rocks themselves.
Set on the rocky coastline between Lamai and Hua Thanon, Hin Ta and Hin Yai typically elicit indulgent chuckles and embarrassed titters from those who go to see them. The view from the coastline here is wonderful and close by is a small beach not suitable for swimming but ideal for a refreshing wade.
Hin Ta and Hin Yai are one of Samui’s most popular tourist attractions, with many small cafes and shops having popped up in and around the entrance to the site, offering plenty of opportunity to enjoy a delicious Thai snack or cool fruit drink while taking in the interesting scenery.
