Phuket Seashell Museum
Phuket Marine Life
Going to a seashell museum when one is already at the beach may sound like a silly idea, but those who would skip Phuket’s unique seashell museum would definitely be missing out. Located right by Rawai Beach, the Phuket Seashell Museum offers an incredible gallery of seashells, including many which are considered very rare and are highly desired by collectors. Although most of the shells come from the local area, some have been brought in from overseas to make the collection even more impressive.
The museum itself is very modern and located in the basement of a larger building. It is all clearly marked and easy to find, and very comfortable inside. The air-conditioning makes it the perfect place to come to beat the heat, and can be a welcome change of pace after several days on the beach or checking out temples.
All the information in the museum is displayed in both English and Thai, allowing foreign visitors to truly understand what it is that they are looking at. The entry fee is fairly negligible, and helps make sure the museum stays as well-cared for as it is.
Phuket Shopping
The Phuket Seashell Museum houses some true gems, including a rare noble volute and the world’s largest golden pearl, which is an astonishing 140 karats. In addition to the exhibits on display, the museum has an intriguing gift shop for those looking to do a little Phuket shopping. The highlights of course are shell items, both rare shells aimed at collectors but also some truly beautiful shell carvings, showing off the talents of local artisans.
The shop also has an impressive collection of pearl items, including not only some truly gorgeous pearls but also a wide variety of items inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The museum is open from 8am to 6pm every day, and is convenient to the entire Rawai area.
